Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about our driver education services? Our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page is here to help! We’ve compiled answers to the most common questions about our courses, scheduling, pricing, and the process of obtaining your Indiana driver’s license. Explore the FAQs below for quick and helpful information

Who can take driver's education?
Any Indiana resident over the age of 15 is eligible to enroll in and complete the driver's education course.

Do I need a learner's permit before registering?
Not necessarily. If the student is 15 at the time of registration, we will issue a Certificate of Driver Education (CDE) form, which is required to obtain a Driver Education Learner’s Permit. After receiving the certificate, the student can take the written exam at the BMV to obtain the permit. For students 16 or older, the CDE form is not needed to acquire the permit.

Do I need to pass the written exam at the BMV before getting a learner's permit?
Yes, the BMV requires students to pass a written exam before issuing a Learner’s Permit. Afterward, students will need to pass a driving exam either with us at NextGen Driving Academy or at the BMV to apply for their operator’s license.

What documents are needed to get a learner’s permit?
To get a learner’s permit, you’ll need to bring the Certificate of Driver Education (CDE) form (if under 16), a birth certificate, your Social Security card, and two forms of residency verification to the BMV.

How do I schedule behind-the-wheel lessons?
Once registered, you can easily schedule your behind-the-wheel lessons through our "Book Online" page. You can choose flexible dates and times that fit your schedule.

Can I take the driving test with NextGen Driving Academy?
Yes, students who complete our driver’s education program are eligible to take the driving test with one of our certified instructors, rather than taking it at the BMV.

How long does the driver’s education course take to complete?
The course consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction, which can be completed online at your own pace, and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, which can be scheduled flexibly.

What happens if I miss a scheduled driving lesson?
If you miss a scheduled drive without providing at least 24 hours' notice, a "No Show" fee will apply to cover the instructor's time.

Can I take the road test even if I’m not enrolled in NextGen Driving Academy?
Yes, we offer road test services for students who completed their education elsewhere. You can take the test with one of our instructors using one of our vehicles.
