Getting your Permit at 15 CDEs

Getting Your License
After Completing Driver Education

Hold your permit for at least 180 days.

Must be at least 16 years and 90 days old.

Complete a minimum of 50 practice driving hours while holding your permit.

Complete 6 hours of drive lessons with a certified instructor.

Pass the Road Test.
Without Completing Driver Education

Hold your permit for at least 180 days.

Must be at least 16 years and 270 days old.

Complete a minimum of 50 practice driving hours while holding your permit.

Pass the Road Test.
Permit Test Overview
-
The Indiana Permit Test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions:
-
16 questions on traffic signs.
-
34 questions from other sections of the Indiana Driver’s Manual.

Review the Indiana Driver's Manual thoroughly before taking the test.
-
No appointment is needed at the BMV, but you must arrive at least an hour before closing.

There is no fee for the test, but if you don’t pass, you’ll need to wait until the next day to retake it. You can take the test as many times as necessary to pass.
Road Test Overview

After completing Driver Education, you can take the road test either at the BMV or through a driving school.

At the BMV:
-
You must provide your own vehicle.
-
You will receive your license immediately upon passing.

With NextGen Driving Academy:
-
$45 fee, which includes the use of our vehicle.

You may take the test with the same instructor who taught you.
-
Upon passing, you will be provided with paperwork to take to the BMV to obtain your license.

The content of the test is the same regardless of where you take it. Choose the option that works best for you.
Driving Schedules and Instructions for Parents
Parents will be notified via text and email 14 to 30 days before their student's scheduled month for driving sessions. A calendar showing available driving times will be provided. Parents will need to sign up their student for six driving sessions.
Typical Driving Times and Days

Tuesday: 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Thursday: 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Saturday: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Sunday: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Note: If these times conflict with your student’s schedule, please email us at nextgendrivingacademy@gmail.com. NextGen Driving Academy will do its best to accommodate requests. Most driving sessions will take place during the times listed above.
Students must complete at least 50% of their online coursework prior to beginning driving lessons.
